GEO Symposium and ODOK Workshop 2024

LDN and Food Security

Apacheta was present last week at the GEO Symposium and ODOK Workshop 2024 in Hangzhou, China. Our CEO Cesar Luis Garcia was representing GEO-LDN Working Group 4 and participated in the Agriculture and Food Security Session and also performed live sessions to showcase the Decision Support Systems (DSS).

Breaking Silos to Integrate Data and Approaches

The Agriculture and Food Security Session explored current and future synergies between global, regional, and national initiatives using Earth Observation (EO) for agricultural monitoring and food security. It also highlighted recent EO and AI innovations and their role in shaping the future of agriculture and food systems.

Decision Support Systems in the Live Demo Session

Cases of Nigeria and Ghana Teams were presented in the Live Demo Session. We co-develop Decision Support Systems (DSS) with countries to integrate Earth Observation data, national statistics, and local knowledge into user-friendly tools that support evidence-based decision-making. These systems are tailored to national priorities and capacities, helping governments monitor land degradation, assess land use dynamics, and align policies with sustainability goals. Built on open-source platforms, they are designed to be scalable, transparent, and accessible across institutions.

What is the conclusion?

Because food security is shaped by many interacting factors, we need better data and stronger tools that link EO products with local knowledge. Just as important is the ability to bring together information from different fields and sectors. Making this happen requires financial support to strengthen collaboration, fill data gaps, and build new models that guide decision-making.
